Marrakech, founded in 1062 by Abu Bakr ibn Umar and located in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains, is the ultimate tourist destination in Morocco. Do not be fooled by this statement, as the city does remain completely unaffected by its numerous visitors.

Marrakech has thrived through tourism for centuries while its religiousness, commercial trade, and education collectively offer its visitors a truly one-of-a-kind destination.

Marrakech is exotic, unbelievable, and probably one of the most unique cities in the world. There are plenty of palaces, monuments, caravanserais, and 18 major markets – the famous souks of the medina. Marrakesh’s old town is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

2- Fez

Fez was founded in 789AD, during the Idrisid dynasty, and is located in northern Morocco. Fez is one of the most important historical tourist destinations within the Kingdom. The most well-preserved Arab medina in the world, here you can expect to immerse yourself a few centuries back into the past.

Inside the old city walls, the University of Al Quaraouiyine stands as the oldest continuously functioning university in the world, founded in 859AD. The second largest city in Morocco, Fez is also inscribed on the UNESCO list as a World Heritage site.

The city’s many shops offer distinct, regional handicrafts while, near its fishing port, several restaurants serve scrumptious and fresh, grilled fish. Famous for its Gnawa musical culture, as well as being an ultimate sport surfing destination, Essaouira is also inscribed on the UNESCO list as a World Heritage site.

4- Ksar Ait Benhaddou

The Ksar of Aït Benhaddou is located 25km from Ouarzazate, in southern Morocco. It remains the only UNESCO World Heritage site in this part of the country, as it used to be an important outpost along the former caravan route between the Sahara Desert and Marrakech. The area’s particularity lies in the fact that the whole village is built from mud bricks, using the adobe technique.

The views from its hilltop are amazing while, from this perspective, we can immerse ourselves in visiting the old village with its numerous kasbahs. Some parts of the TV series Game of Thrones were shot in Aït Benhaddou, along with several other famous movies such as The Mummy, Gladiator, The Sheltering Sky, The Jewel of the Nile, Kundun, and The Kingdom of Heaven.

5- Erg Chebbi Dunes

The Dunes of Erg Chebbi are located in southeastern Morocco. Erg Chebbi is one of the two largest existing “Ergs” in the country. The most popular desert destination in Morocco, Erg Chebbi is particularly famous because of the brilliant orange hue characteristic of its fine sand.

It is possible to stay in hotels within the surrounding villages of Erg Chebbi, or even to camp in oases inside the dunes themselves. Merzouga is the largest settled village at the base of the dunes.

6- Rabat
